A new feature integrated into Apple’s iPad Pro may also be included in the upcoming iPhone 12, thanks to two teardown videos of Apple’s latest product.

In the videos, a LiDAR scanner can be seen, and in its small size, could fit perfectly inside the upcoming iPhone. LiDAR is a surveying method that measures distance to a target by illuminating the target with laser light and measuring the reflected light with a sensor. Differences in laser return times and wavelengths can then be used to make digital 3-D representations of the target. The scanning technology has terrestrial, airborne, and mobile applications. This new feature leads many to believe that the upcoming iPhone’s AR capabilities will be a game-changer for the smartphone market and a true differential against rival companies.

You can watch iFixit and EverythingApplePro’s videos for detailed info on iPhone 9 and 12 Pro leaks and how the LiDAR scanner looks like below.
