The winners of the #Your2020Portrait that the Brooklyn Museum launched at the start of May via Instagram, have been announced. Incoming and current college students, ages 18-25, in the U.S., were invited to submit original portraits in any medium, and the 5 exceptional examples from the contest have been chosen, as well as virtually displayed on the museum’s social media accounts and also Instagram’s Design and Creators handles.

Winning portraits include a graphite drawing called Self-Indulgent by 18-year-old Ashley Jiao (Columbia University), an oil painting titled Before the First Star Appears by 23-year-old Hannah Reinhard (RISD), a mixed-media work named Former Men by 24-year-old Sydney Vernon (Cooper Union), an Untitled screenprint by 24-year-old Cheryl Mukherii (ICP-Bard), and 22-year-old Cornelius Tulloch‘s Birth of a Legacy photograph. As part of the contest, all students were awarded $,5000 USD grants from the museum.

The curator of the virtual exhibition, Antwuan Sargent, worked with a team of judges comprised of artist Chella Man, contemporary painter Chloe Wise, and photographer Quil Lemons, to select the winning portraits, and stated: “Until very recently, portraiture was not a very diverse medium. So to see these young people take this medium and make it their own is very 2020.”

Check out the winners below.
